Informative Article On Cappiello

This past Friday, the Brookfield Journal published a lenghthy article regarding State Senator David Cappiello's campaign for Congress. You can read it here. It was a very well written piece which really gave an insight to what issues Cappiello plans on addressing, and what some of his views are. Here are some main points and quotes that I thought many might find interesting regarding what Cappiello said:

  • Cappiello believes the United States has to be more competitive regarding global trade saying, "We can still be the leader if we do things right."

  • Cappiello said that he supports President Bush's tax cut of 2001, and his 2003 economic growth package. He says that, "The revenue is increasing exponentially into the federal coffers ... the problem hasn't been the tax cuts, it's been the spending increases."

  • He also mentioned that he has the support of mostly all Republicans who were also rumored to be candidates for the seat, and that the chances of a primary are not very high.

  • Mentioned by someone who was rumored to possibly take a shot at the seat, State Senator Andrew Roraback, was that Cappiello is the type of Republican who could win a Connecticut Congressional seat because he is fiscally conservative and socially moderate.

  • Cappiello said that Congressman Murphy held a press conference on Candlewood Lake, and only invited Democratic officials. He had this to say on Murphy's actions, "He ran last year saying that 'It's time for a change' and that he wanted to end all of the bickering in Washington and then he holds a news conference on an important issue where there has been bipartisan cooperation and he doesn't invite any Republicans."

  • He mentioned yet again that he has been against President Bush's Iraq policies since Operation Iraqi Freedom started.

  • Lastly, as said in the article, Cappiello criticized Murphy for voting for wasteful spending during his first six months in office and missing an important ethics vote.
Well, it is still VERY early, and like I have been saying only time will tell what will happen. It is good Cappiello has come out and let people know where he stands on various issues, but it is still going to be difficult for him to defeat a popular incumbent. Just remember, many thought Nancy Johnson would easily win re-election in 2006 at this point, and we all know what happened. Anything is possible, and this race should be a pretty good one.

I think Murphy has a 58%-42% lead over Cappiello at this point.

Since Brookfield is probably the strongest conservative town in CT, it didn't surprise me that they write what should actually be considered a feature story on Cappiello.

The article didn't press him on any of the issues he commented yet, they let him launch a series a cheap shots at Murphy.

Murphy knows how to campaign as he was on a team that almost beat Johnson and then easily defeating her in '06. On the other hand, Cappiello hasn't been in a fight since his well-known battle with Boughton when Mark pulled one of his signature sneaky political moves during the State Rep. convention.

The RNCC is short on cash if anything, they would have poured cash into the 2nd and 4th dist but since the person challenging Courtney has just about enough money for a ham sandwich, they'll all put pull out of CT altogether and only work for Shays.

Basically, 2008 is going to be too tough for the Republicans as it is and unless they see that David has a clear shot, they're not going to waste money on someone who's has no chance against a popular freshman.

Murphy's GOTV in Danbury alone was amazing and whereas Murphy won't have to spend cash leasing a building in the area, the Danbury RTC doesn't even have a real headquarters.

If someone that Boughton loved like Nancy didn't win Danbury, what makes you think that David, someone that mark doesn't like, has a real shot?

Murphy easily by double digits in the entire 5th and by 5 points in Danbury.

BTW: You'd be better if you simply turned on your moderation and weed out the immature comments...

You have to be crazy. Murphy by 5 points in Danbury? Cappiello has been our senator for almost ten years, he is very popular and well liked. Maybe he won't win the district, but to say he would lose Danbury is crazy.

Cappiello never had a real challenge in Danbury.

I'll take Murphy's popularity versus the Cappiello family name anyday. David will lose in the 3,4,5 and 6th ward...

Cappiello wil win Danbury, Sherman, and New Fairfield. This is where he has served for the past ten years and they know him. It's to early to jump to a conclusion. I mean did anyone know who Chris Murphy was from danbury at this time in 2005?

"I mean did anyone know who Chris Murphy was from danbury at this time in 2005?"

One word, yes! Murphy ran the campaign against Johnson back in '04 and came within striking distance of beating her.

Cappiello has never been in a real challenge and I'm sorry to break your heart but you can have Redding and New Fairfield, the 5th CD is a large area and there is no way Cappiello is winning the areas that count (Waterbury, New Britan, Cheshire) during an presidential election year in which the anti-war vote is going to drive what little there is of the Republican party right out of Washington.

I'm also sorry to bring this to your attention but Murphy is actually pretty well liked among Republicans in Danbury and only unpopular incumbents are booted out of office.

Personally, I think this is David's swan song. He has kids and maybe he wants to take a shot at this before calling it quits. He can run for his state senate seat and it would have been wiser to wait until '10 to go after Murphy...at least by that time, the war would not be such a big issue and the Republicans would have a chance to win back the public's faith.

I say David loses and goes out as a decent State Senator that served his district well. The real dog-fight will be among the Republicans in '10 and '12 and expect Boughton to take a shot at one of the Congressional or Senate seats.

'08 is not in play for Republicans, it's that simple.

First of all Murphy ran the campaign in 1996 and almost beat Johnson. She won in 2004 with 60% of the vote.

Cappiello is running on the anti-war position and is not in touch with "Washington Republicans".

Maybe you should tell me what Republicans in Danbury like Murphy because the ones I know don't. And don't expect those that may actually be okay with him to vote for Murphy over Cappiello. David is loved within the Danbury Republican party and throughout the city.

He may not win in 2008 but this does put him in good play to take another shot at it in 2010. And one thing you should know is that if it ever came down to Cappiello or Boughton, Cappiello would always have the upper hand.

2008 may not be a great year for Republicans. But with a moderate well-liked candidate for President they may surprise you. Cappiello is very moderate and not your average Republican. That's why he has a shot.

Cappiello hasn't a clue as to how to actually lead and make decisions. Name one thing he has done for Danbury or his district. Nothing but a bunch of empty pronouncements. Face it, he is a loser, and when you are out, you are out..

and btw, David is not loved by the Danbury Republican Party.

Yes he is. He has his own kind of hold on the party and will get their support and help without a doubt. If he was a loser he wouldn't be where he is today. You can have your opinion but he has established a base of supporters and is very well liked. He is no loser.

BTW read this:

Senator Cappiello has established and maintained an exemplary record of passing effective, far-reaching legislation. He served as a key member of a working group for managed care reforms that developed legislation in 1999 which led to the creation of a managed care ombudsman and expanded coverage for certain diseases. In addition, he played a significant role in the Senate Republican effort in 2001 to expand ConnPACE, the state’s prescription drug program for the elderly and disabled. An advocate of protecting the public’s safety, Cappiello recently made news when he called for an evaluation of Connecticut’s Emergency Management system. The study, to be commenced by the Office of Program Review under his directive will provide a complete overview of all of Connecticut’s Homeland Security Agencies. The purpose is to make sure all of the state’s public safety organizations have the necessary tools available, as well as the proper chain of command in place to help protect the public and make Homeland Security in Connecticut stronger and more efficient.

Senator Cappiello has been recognized by a number of organizations for his legislative accomplishments. He was nominated for the Danbury Jaycees Distinguished Service Award and served as the Education Chairman for the United Way in 1998. The March of Dimes has honored him for his longtime dedication to legislation improving the health of newborns. In June 2002, a bill he drafted, An Act Requiring The Screening of Newborns For Metabolic Diseases, was signed into law. This new legislation expands newborn screening to include testing for L-CHAD and the disorder known as M-CAD, along with other amino acid disorders, organic acid disorders and fatty acid oxidation disorders. Most recently he was recognized by AARP of Connecticut in December 2006. Senator Cappiello was honored for his influential role in securing $5 million in the state budget in order to preserve prescription drug benefits for Connecticut ConnPACE and Medicaid-Medicare recipients. He was also praised for his help in securing funds to implement the Kinship Navigator program which expands access to resources and information for grandparents raising their grandchildren.

More recently, Senator Cappiello played a key legislative role in a critical battle with the state of Connecticut’s Office of Healthcare Access (OHCA) in successfully obtaining Danbury Hospital’s approval to provide Greater Danbury Area residents with direct access to Cardiac Care. Both the American Heart and Lung Associations have awarded Senator Cappiello for his commitment and dedication to a healthier Connecticut. The Connecticut Association of Non-Profits and Connecticut Community Providers have also honored the Senator for his steadfast commitment and service to the nonprofit sector of Connecticut.

I guess he hasn't accomplished anything?

Oh PLEAZE. That wrapsheet on Cappiello means nothing.

There are two Republican camps in Danbury, those who are with Cappiello (e.g, Geilgler) and those who are with the dictator Boughton.

Boughton and Cappiello hate each other and it goes back to when they were going aganinst each other for the State Rep seat.

Johnson was LOVED in Danbury and although Boughton worked hard for her, she was destroyed by Murphy. You don't win on every voting machine in Danbury with only Democratic votes.

Cappiello doesn't have a chance and the fact that he's not running for his state senate seat should be the writing on the wall that he actually wants out of politics. Him running against Murphy is just something he can put on his resume for the future.

No the list of accomplishments are what they are called--accomplishments. I guess I could say the same about what Murphy has done in Congress as meaning nothing. I don't care what you say about two Republican camps because whatever the case they will be fully, yes fully, behinf Cappiello. Maybe Johnson was liked in Danbury, but Cappiello is loved much more. He will Danbury, it is other areas where he will face problems.

BTW if he wanted out of politics why would he run for Congress to put on a future resume. It makes no sense. But the truth is that he is in this to win.
