Cappiello Running For Congress

It has been reported that our very own State Senator, David Cappiello (R-24), has filed with the FEC, a campaign committee to run against Congressman Chris Murphy (D-5). You can read the story here.

Cappiello was first elected to the State Senate in 1998. Before that, he served as a State Representative, representing the 138th district. You can click here to get his official biography, or click here to read a post I previously wrote about him.

Senator Cappiello hopes to defeat Chris Murphy, who was elected this past November, defeating twenty-four year incumbent Nancy Johnson. Murphy has already raised 420,000 dollars, having the edge in money. However, Cappiello is one of the most well-liked politicians in our area. It will be interesting to see if any other Republicans will come out and announce their intention to run as well. We'll wait and see what develops.

why does cappiello have no chance?

Its not the right time. Sophomore elections have something like 92% get re-elected. Also it will be a presidential year so Cappiello will have a hard time to raise funds. I would vote for Murphy but if I really wanted Capp. to be in D.C i would advise him to wait til 2010

Also, a thing to add if he runs in 08 he will have to give up his seat in the CT senate. Gieglier would be the best replacment but she would have very good chances against the likes of young Taborsak or Bartlett, assuming that Godfrey would like to keep his power in the house

correction: she wouldn't have a good chance

Boughton is the only candidate that would win. Sorry, Cappiello is going to lose.

A big factor in this is MONEY. The Dems want to be sure Murphy gets re-elected and are raising big $$ to keep him there. No matter who challenges him, they will need to be able to raise a ton of money to compete.

Keep in mind Cappiello is an extremely popular Senator, and usually goes unchallenged. This would be a whole new world to enter, but that popularity can make this more of a race than people might realize.

Stay tuned.

I'd like to see Boughton and Cappiello primary each other. Their dislike goes way back to their State Rep days and I think Cappiello would beat Boughton with little problem

I wouldn't count on a primary. The Mayor will get re-elected this year and weigh options for the future.

In the meantime, I wouldn't discount the possibility of Tom Saadi filling Cappiello's Senate seat. He could very well be the strongest candidate and is very well respected on both sides of the aisle.

It should be interesting to watch. There should be lots of positioning going on.
