Perkins beat Democrats Terry Tierney and Manuel Bataguas. Perkins got 26 delegates compared to four for Tierney and one for Bataguas. In order to of forced a primary, Tierney needed five delegates. However, he could collect 1,000 signatures to force a primary, which he said he might consider.
It doesn't seem that likely though, as Tierney said it was important to unite the party in order to win back the seat. The last Democrat to hold this seat was Jim Maloney, who was then elected to Congress in 1994. Since then, the district was represented by Republicans Mark Neilsen and now by David Cappiello.
If things stand, Perkins will face Republican Mike McLachlan in November.
